Blackstone, Offerton



At the very beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the possibly three hundred or so mill workers houses in the centre of Stockport had no sanitation. The night soil cart used to come to the houses, collect the excrement and take it to Blackstone Farm in Offerton to be dumped.


When land has been used for such purposes, it should be considered contaminated for hundreds of years.


The Council intends to build on Blackstone despite very, very high levels of Methane detected at the site.  Given what has gone on at the Toxic Waste Dump school, documented elsehwere on this site, it is not possible to believe they are carrying out even the most basic safeguards.

This is the latest planning application for the site published in the Stockport Express on 29th August 2012.



THI Riverside Ltd would seem to be the preferred developers for the site.  They are a new company, so there are no company accounts that I can find.  Is it wise to entrust such a contaminated site to such a new company? Will they be able to afford to carry out the contamination remediation?


I have noticed some interesting things in the accounts of other companies connected to THI Riverside Ltd.

There will be a nice little earner in this for someone, so the contamination issues will be ignored, based on my past experience of how Stockport Council works.

This is the situation mid-October 2012.

"Significant concentration of Methane and Carbon Dioxide. .....The preliminary risk to proposed development users from hazardous gases is therefore assessed as high..... also peceived in this respect to adjoining site users."

If they have pound signs in their eyes as normal, no-one at the Council will take this danger seriously, as they didn't at the Toxic Waste Dump School.



"The potential for significant volumes of toxic and/or inflammable/explosive gas to be present during site construction works is high."

Given what I know about Stockport Council and their contamination so-called experts, all risks will be swept under the carpet.

They want to build on this site - it will be a nice little earner for this Arfur Daley Council, so as with the Toxic Waste Dump School very genuine concerns about toxic waste are airbrushed away!

"The nature of the landfilling was extremley variable and from the noxious odours emanating from the disturbed infill it is likely to consider (sic?) putrescible matter and therefore possibele high levels of Methane and Carbon Dioxide."

"We would strongly recommend abandonment of the scheme...."

This was written the last time they tried to build on this site. Experience with the Toxic Waste Dump School at North Reddish leads me to believe Stockport Council - including very senior council officers and councillors - will completely ignore the dangers posed by this site to the safety and health of local residents.


Again, funny goings on with planning. They chose to send me a massive report by post, photocopied at great expense and delivered by car. Why not simply send me an electronic copy?  Delay, obfuscate, publicy humiliate, confuse, insult, and if all else fails - imprison. Stockport Council's tactics against people who dare to question their shenanigans.

Multi-million pound contracts and no proper details of meetings.  It is a jolly good job planning in Stockport is not corrupt; that is all I can say!

Sustainable drainage will be a requisite on the site.
